Eastland

Gisborne and the Eastland region, unique for our history of discovery.   Among the earliest Maori explorers from Hawaiki arrived in Turanganui a Kiwa (Gisborne) from as early as the thirteenth century. In 1769 Captain James Cook and the crew of HMS Endeavour landed in Gisborne and there followed the historic first meeting between European and Maori.

Home to one of the largest Maori populations in NZ, Eastland offers truly authentic cultural experiences.  Watching the sunrise out of the Pacific Ocean, you can be certain that you will be one of the first people in the world to see the new day.

Stunning world famous surf beaches, surrounded by picturesque wine country and a warm kiwi welcome from the friendly locals ensures an enjoyable and memorable stay for every visitor to Eastland.

Local Knowledge

Located on the sunny east coast of New Zealand Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sun each day. It is one of the sunniest areas in New Zealand with an average yearly sunshine of 2200 hours.

It has plenty of rural charm and is a top holiday spot during the summer months with 3 beautiful beaches within the region to choose from. Midway, Waikanae and Wainui beaches are all within a short distance of Gisborne and provide some of the best beaches for surfing in the country. It is also home to the music festival Rhythm and Vines which is one of the most popular new years destinations during summer. Be sure to book well in advance if you are visiting during this time.

‘The Maori name for the district is Tairawhiti which means “The coast upon which the sun shines across the water”. Kaiti Beach, near the city, was where the Maori immigrational waka, Horouta, landed; and is also the first European landing place in New Zealand’

Gisborne is accessible by air with Air New Zealand or you can drive there in around 5-6 hours from Auckland. If you are into surfing and looking for a chilled out summer holiday spot than Gisborne is definitely the town for you.
